The Pataxos indians first settled the town founded by the jesuits in the 18th century, calling it São Miguel da Barra do Rio de Contas, as a tribute to the church built at that time and still in use. By 1742, it became a municipality and later, in 1931, it became known as Itacaré - which means ?twisted stone'. After the Ilhéus-Itacaré road BA001 was paved, only ten years ago, tourism flourished in the region and it became an important center within the state.

The large or small bays with stunning beaches and good waves, surrounded by preserved Atlantic Forest and coconut trees that you will find in Itacaré, will surely take your breath away.

Downtown

The central area of town is characterized by retaining much of its colonial atmosphere. Most of the colonial stately homes were built at the beginning of the 20th Century, the golden age of cocoa, when the farmers built their homes in Portuguese architectural style. There were three different floor plan styles: Two-level houses, where the colonels lived, homes with elevated basements, that were inhabited by merchants and small farmers, and one-story houses were lower class people lived. Another highlight in the same area, is the São Miguel church, built by the Jesuits in an elevated part of town, offering a view of Boca da Barra where large ships used to arrive in Itacaré. The construction of the church began in 1718 and was finished in 1723. The Jesuit house was built around the same time, on the right side of the church. A tunnel connected the Jesuit house to the church and was used to run away and escape if the indians attacked.

Pituba is a bustling, colorful neighborhood where tourists, artists, surfers, hippies and locals mix. Caminho das Praias is the main street, where you will find lively bars, restaurants and craft shops. This street provides access to the main beaches located within the village.

Contas River

Contas River

Originating at 1,500-meter altitude, in the majestic Tromba ridge - Chapada Diamantina, the Contas river flows about 620 kilometers, all the way down to Itacaré before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at the beautiful Conchas beach. Heading up the river in a native dugout canoe and passing through mangroves, which according to experts, are the cradle of civilization, is a great ride. Guaiamun and Aratu crabs can be seen along the way, as well as beautiful waterfalls and cocoa farms, all surrounded by luxuriant nature.
As it passes through Taboquinhas district, the Contas river offers some of the best rafting trips and is considered one of the best to enjoy river rafting in Brazil. Class III and IV rapids will keep your adrenalin pumping. Tourists can also experience a 180-meter zipline adventure, soaring through air over the calm, blue waters of the Contas river. Another highlight is rapelling 10-meters over Noré waterfall. Guaranteed thrills for adventure seekers.

Pontal

Located on the north side of the Contas river, this almost private, white sand beach, is approximately six kilometers long and is a great option if you are looking for a peaceful place in Itacaré. Beach access is perfect for adventurers, as the Contas river must be crossed in native canoes to get there. The six-kilometer course leads to Piracanga beach, where the river debouches into the ocean with a beautiful view of the Maraú peninsula to the north.

São José

São José

São José beach, where the Itacaré Eco Resort is located, is a small bay with high rocky scarps, extending 50 meters north and south, with tide pools and good surfing conditions.

Prainha

Prainha

The beauty of perfect waves and the coconut trees from the old coconut farm, are some of the great surprises offered by this beach. It is located next to the Itacaré Eco Resort's beach and can ony be accessed through medium difficulty trails.

Jeribucaçu

Jeribucaçu

A magnificent beach, where the Jeribucaçu river meets the sea. Hikers will discover other treasures like the Arruda and Cachoeira da Usina beaches that can be accessed by medium difficulty trails.

Engenhoca

The moment you see the amazing beauty of the access trail, you will know how special this beach is. Fresh water next to the ocean, perfect waves for surf and tide pools among the rocks. The trail access is the same as for Havaizinho.

Havaizinho

With small bays dotted with rocky scarps, crystal clear water, great waves, desert beaches and tide pools, this is a little Shangri-la next to Engenhoca beach.

The longest beach in Itacaré is a good surf spot and excellent for strolling.

Tiririca

Tiririca

A good surf spot and one of the most popular with surfers, within walking distance of Itacaré village.

Resende

Resende

When the tide is at its lowest, tide pools are left behind on the rocky shore of this small bay with white sand and coconut trees in the background. Walking through the rocks, along the right side, leads to Tiririca beach.

Concha

Concha

Family-friendly beach with beachside huts where local food is served. This location offers a beautiful view of the lighthouse and the Contas River estuary.

Ribeira

Ribeira

The Ribeira stream debouches into this beach with a stream water pool and beachside huts. The trail that leads to Prainha can be accessed from this beach located within Itacaré.

Ponta do Xaréu

Ponta do Charéu

By the end of the day, after having enjoyed trails, beaches and waterfalls, one of your most special moments in Itacaré, will be watching the awesome Ponta do Charéu sunset at Concha beach. There you will also have a chance to see where the Contas river meets the bay of Pontal and Concha beaches at the central coast of Itacaré, as well as the Maraú peninsula. Xaréu is a fishing spot and it was named by old fishermen after a fish of the same name.
